The Amsterdam City Archives is set to host the traveling exhibition «Moroccans in Amsterdam: A Shared History» from September 24 to October 11, 2025. This event, part of the celebrations for the 750th anniversary of the Dutch capital, is organized by the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Migration and Development (EMCEMO) in partnership with the archives and the City Center district. The exhibition aims to «explore the history, present, and future of the Moroccan community» that is intricately woven into the city’s social, cultural, economic, and political landscape.
Organizers highlight that Amsterdam boasts «the largest Moroccan community in the Netherlands», with nearly 10% of the city's population being of Moroccan descent. They stress that «members of this community contribute to the city's history through their personal stories». This project seeks to provide «a permanent place in Amsterdam's shared history and make their contributions visible to a wide audience».
The exhibition, along with its website, delves into various themes such as «migration from Morocco to the Netherlands, living and working conditions in Amsterdam, family reunification, the social struggle for equality and against racism, and the role of migrant organizations, mosques, and local media». It also highlights «the fight for the emancipation of women and the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the political, cultural, and sports participation of Moroccan Amsterdam residents».
In conjunction with the exhibition's opening, the program will be enriched by meetings with civil society actors, politicians, academics, and artists. Notable speakers include EMCEMO president Abdou Menebhi, historian Nadia Bouras, filmmaker Fatima Jebli Ouazzani, and journalist-presenter Nadia Moussaid, among others.
The exhibition will also feature portraits of prominent Moroccan Amsterdam residents and organizations, both past and present. Additionally, the exhibition's website will be regularly updated with news, reports, and portraits, alongside general information on various themes, the program, personal testimonies, videos, and visual materials, as well as an overview of the sources used.
The platform invites visitors to share their own stories or test their knowledge with a quiz.
