The Algerian military has halted the issuance of permits for Sahrawis to legally exit the Tindouf camps and travel to Algeria. «This decision is a response to the rising number of young camp residents attempting perilous journeys across the Mediterranean in makeshift boats, aiming to reach the Balearic Islands,» a Sahrawi source informed Yabiladi.

«Concerned about a potential mass migration to Spain, the Front's leadership has requested an increased Algerian security presence in the camps,» the source added.

These travel restrictions for Sahrawis come as the Balearic Islands report a staggering 77% rise in irregular migrant arrivals from Algeria as of August 15, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. This contrasts sharply with the rest of Spain, which saw a 29.3% decrease in irregular immigration during the same period compared to 2024, reports the official Spanish press.

A Polisario media outlet has acknowledged the surge of young Sahrawis heading to Spain, urging the Front's leadership to «manage» this migration to benefit the Polisario's agenda in the Iberian Peninsula.

It is noteworthy that the families of the separatist movement's top officials are legally residing in Spain.
