Unlike its recent positions, left-wing party Podemos wants Spain to grant citizenship to Sahrawis born during the Spanish occupation.
Last week, Mauritania’s former Defense Minister Mohamed Ould Ghazouani said that if elected president of the country he would stop granting Mauritanian citizenship to Sahrawis from Tindouf. Ould Ghazouani’s statement was denounced by the Front which sent a delegation to meet officials from Nouakchott.
Speaking during an election rally, Wednesday, Mauritania’s former Defence Minister Mohamed Ould Ghazounai said that he is against the idea of granting Mauritanian citizenship to Sahrawis from the Tindouf camps. Ould Ghazouani is running for presidential elections, scheduled for June 22.
In a series of events, the Polisario Front has been insisting on the idea of being the only «legitimate representative of Saharwis». To back its stand, the Front relies on a non-binding resolution, adopted by the UN General Assembly in the 1970s.
