In response to the recent developments, Brahim Ghali has addressed the international backlash following the May 5 attack on civilian sites in Smara by Polisario forces. This comes after Bachir Mustapha Sayed's message to the Sahrawis.
The Polisario leader penned a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, condemning what he calls «irresponsible and misleading statements from certain governments». He argues these statements are designed to «mislead public opinion and obscure the reality on the ground» in the Sahara.
Ghali accuses the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, the European Union, and the United Nations of attempting to «divert attention from the war of aggression», which he claims Morocco has waged «since October 1975». The letter further criticizes what he describes as a «campaign of misinformation, a web of lies, and misleading narratives».
This communication appears aimed primarily at the public within the Tindouf camps. By taking this step, Ghali seeks to prevent his longstanding rival, Bachir Mustapha Sayed, from dominating the discourse on the Polisario's stance, especially with the movement's upcoming congress at the end of 2026.
