DR

On Monday, October 13, Moroccan leftist politician Mustapha Brahma passed away. He had previously served as the national secretary of the Democratic Path Party.

Born in 1955 near Berrechid, Brahma rose to prominence within Morocco’s leftist movement from an early age. After enrolling at the Mohammadia School of Engineers, he became deeply engaged in student and political activism. In 1973, he joined Ila Al-Amam, one of Morocco’s most influential Marxist-Leninist movements, then led by the late Abraham Serfaty.

Brahma was first arrested in 1976 on charges of belonging to a banned organization and threatening state security. He was detained for a year without trial before being released. A year later, he helped found the Committees of Democratic Students, which campaigned for lifting the ban on the National Union of Moroccan Students (UNEM). He also played a key role in the rise of the Base Students (Tullab al-Qi‘a) movement, which went on to become a major force in Morocco’s leftist student circles.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Brahma took part in rebuilding «Ila Al-Amam». In 1985, he was arrested again and sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of «conspiracy against the regime». His trial drew over forty defense lawyers. In 1987, he married while imprisoned at Ghbila Prison in Casablanca. He was eventually released in 1994 under a general amnesty after nine years of detention.

Following his release, Brahma resumed his political and trade union activities. He co-founded the Democratic Path Party in 1995, serving as deputy national secretary, and later helped establish the National Union for Housing, Urban Planning, and the Environment in 1999, where he was elected deputy general secretary. In 2007, he joined the executive bureau of the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT).

In July 2012, Brahma was elected national secretary of the Democratic Path Party during its third congress in Casablanca, a position he held until July 2022.
