With just two weeks to go before the UN Security Council votes on a new resolution regarding Western Sahara, Russia remains on the fence, sending out mixed signals.

On one hand, Moscow is not entirely dismissing the initiatives spearheaded by the United States, France, and the United Kingdom, which aim to secure the Council's backing for Morocco's proposed autonomy plan. On the other hand, Russia is setting its own terms.

«If a new resolution is drafted that establishes different principles as a basis for a settlement, we will be ready to engage in discussions, provided these initiatives are acceptable to all parties involved», declared Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday, October 13, during a press conference.

«Russia is prepared to support a resolution to the Western Sahara conflict that satisfies all parties. For us, the issue will be resolved when all concerned parties genuinely feel that a balanced solution has been achieved.»

The United States is anticipated to present a draft resolution addressing the Sahara issue to the Security Council in the coming days. As a permanent member of the UN's executive body, Russia wields veto power over such resolutions.
