On Tuesday, October 14th, in Barcelona, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the People's Party (PP), introduced a «plan for immigration». As the dominant political force in both chambers of the Spanish Parliament, the PP seeks to tighten the requirements for obtaining Spanish nationality. Applicants will be required to demonstrate a higher level of proficiency in the Spanish language, as well as a deeper understanding of the country's culture and constitutional framework.
Feijóo asserted that «this is the best path to integration» for immigrants. «Our aim is to restore nationality to its most noble dimension. In other words: Spanish nationality is not given away; it is earned,» he declared to his supporters.
These new criteria are part of the PP's broader migration strategy, which Feijóo outlined at the end of September, advocating for selective immigration that is «aligned with our culture.»
The unveiling of this plan coincides with a poll indicating a strong lead for Pedro Sánchez's PSOE, which holds 34.8% of voter intentions, compared to the PP's 19.8%, a gap of 15 points. More troubling for the conservatives, Santiago Abascal's far-right Vox party is almost on par, with 17.7% of the votes if early legislative elections were to take place.
It's worth recalling that in December 2022, Spanish deputies, including those from the PP, delivered a setback to Vox by decisively rejecting its proposal, labeled as «racist» and «xenophobic,» which sought to impose stricter conditions for acquiring Spanish nationality.
