In a striking departure from the silence observed by Algeria's political parties across the spectrum, former president of the Movement of Society for Peace, Abderrazak Makri, has voiced strong criticism over the lack of open public discourse on the Sahara conflict. Makri warned against being caught off guard by this pivotal shift, following the recent UN Security Council decision.
While Algerian media outlets tout what they claim as «Algeria's success in introducing amendments to the American draft», Makri took to his Facebook page to argue otherwise. He highlighted that the Security Council resolution suggests that granting Western Sahara genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could offer the most viable solution to the decades-long issue, urging all parties to negotiate on this foundation.
Makri posed a series of probing questions that he claims are absent from Algeria's internal discussions: «Why did Algeria abstain from voting? Does this signal an acceptance of the status quo or is it succumbing to certain pressures?» He also questioned why Algeria's representative did not hold the United States, the 'penholder,' accountable for this significant change.
Further, he challenged the narrative surrounding Algeria's sacrifices, asking, «How do we evaluate the significant sacrifices made by Algeria because of this issue? What is the assessment of the losses? Who bears responsibility, and who will answer for this?»
Makri speculated on the possibility of continued U.S. pressure on regional countries and the Polisario Front during upcoming negotiations, supporting the autonomy proposal. He inquired whether American officials' statements about mending Morocco-Algeria relations are linked to this shift.
He continued to question the «future of Moroccan-Algerian relations after this development», and the stance of «opportunistic agitators, from parties, organizations, and figures, who were escalating the Western Sahara issue». Makri expressed surprise at the absence of «electronic flies», sarcastically wondering if they would campaign against the decision and the United States or align with the decision to abstain from the official vote.
Makri concluded his post with a poignant question: Have the countries of the region «missed the opportunity to reach a solution through dialogue» over the years, ensuring the rights and interests of all parties without foreign intervention?
