On Tuesday in Nouakchott, Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani hosted a delegation from the Polisario Front. The group included Hama Salama, the president of the so-called «Sahrawi parliament», the commander of the third military region adjacent to Mauritania, and the director of security and documentation, as reported by the AMI agency.
Representing Mauritania, Major General Seydou Samba Dia, the secretary general for external security and documentation (counter-espionage), was also present at this meeting.
The involvement of senior security and military officials from both sides indicates that the dialogue likely centered on border issues. Recently, Mauritanian gold prospectors have been attacked by armed Polisario elements, leading the prospectors to strike back.
Just last week, Polisario members breached Mauritanian territory in an attempt to launch projectiles at targets in Es-Smara. On November 12, drones from the Royal Armed Forces thwarted this operation.
Interestingly, the delegation that met with the Mauritanian president mirrors the one that visited Nouakchott on May 30, soon after the Mauritanian army sealed off the Labriga region to block Polisario militias from accessing the area east of the Sand Wall.
