In a self-funded initiative, an 11-year-old schoolgirl from Blackburn, England, spent three days this past November in the Atlas Mountains to help families still struggling with the aftermath of the 2023 earthquake. Accompanied by her mother and a colleague, Isla Mchugh distributed winter food packs designed to last several months, along with essential blankets, after months of fundraising.

The visit was organised by Benefit Mankind, a Blackburn-based charity active in disaster zones around the world. Isla also visited orphanages and community centres, where she shared her passion for football and handed out kits.

At just 11 years old, she became one of the youngest volunteers the organisation has ever deployed on an international humanitarian mission — a commitment recognised by her school, which granted her special leave for the trip.

«Isla’s journey to Morocco is a remarkable testament to the power of youth activism and the difference that one young person can make», her mother Kelly said. «As she continues to raise awareness and funds for those in need, she inspires her peers and adults alike to take action», she added.
