Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM) announced on Monday the issuance of a commemorative silver coin with a face value of 250 dirhams, along with the release of a commemorative 100-dirham banknote, to mark the hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The coin features, on its obverse, the portrait of Mohammed VI, alongside the inscription «محمد السادس», the Arabic wording «المملكة المغربية» and its equivalent in Tifinagh, as well as the date «2025 – 1447».

On the reverse, the coin bears the inscription «MOROCCO 2025 المغرب», an artistic depiction of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, a map of Africa surrounded by fireworks, and the face value expressed both in numerals (“250”) and in Arabic script («درهما وخمسون مائتان»).

The commemorative banknote, meanwhile, features a portrait of King Mohammed VI, the Kingdom’s coat of arms, a stylized representation of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, a map of Africa, Moroccan arabesque motifs, and a stylized football.

The reverse side includes the name of the issuing institution written in both Tifinagh and Latin characters, an interior view of the Prince Moulay Abdellah complex, silhouettes of football players in action, a ball adorned with the African continent, celebratory stars, and a blend of Moroccan arabesques and African-inspired motifs.

The banknote incorporates several advanced security features, including a windowed security thread with color-shifting and dynamic effects, tactile relief elements for the visually impaired, and microtext.

Speaking to the press, Hassan Regraga, director of Dar As-Sikkah, said the themes reflect Morocco’s cultural richness, its African roots, and the development of its sports infrastructure. He also emphasized that all stages of design and production were carried out using Moroccan expertise.

With legal tender status and a limited release, the 100-dirham commemorative banknote will be issued starting Monday and will circulate alongside existing 100-dirham notes.
