Morocco sees decline in cervical cancer rates thanks to national health strategy

The incidence rates of cervical cancer have been consistently declining in recent years, announced Amine Tahraoui, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, on Monday in Rabat.

Responding to an oral question in the House of Representatives, he highlighted that this disease now ranks fourth among women, with a rate of 6.5% and an incidence of approximately 8.3 cases per 100,000 women. Previously, it was the second most common cancer, with a rate of 12.8% and an incidence of 13.46 cases per 100,000.

Over the past few years, the ministry has prioritized the fight against cervical cancer by incorporating it into the National Cancer Control Plan 2020-2029. This aligns with Morocco's international commitments and the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommendations.

The strategy is structured around three key pillars. The first focuses on prevention, integrating the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine into the National Vaccination Program since 2022, alongside awareness campaigns.

The second pillar involves early screening through a national program targeting women aged 30 to 49. This initiative is operational in 61 prefectures and provinces, screening approximately 500,000 women annually and enhancing the health network with 59 reproductive health reference centers.

The third pillar addresses the management and treatment of over 1,000 precancerous cases each year, with specialized treatments available at 12 regional oncology centers, as well as two reference centers at the university hospitals in Rabat and Casablanca.

Amine Tahraoui pointed out that this comprehensive approach has led to tangible results, evident in the ongoing reduction of cervical cancer incidence rates and improved treatment and recovery prospects.

He stressed that vaccination represents a responsible health decision, backed by recent scientific research and international recommendations.
