RMC publishes, then deletes controversial article on Morocco AFCON opening
DR

The French sports website RMC Sport published an article focusing on King Mohammed VI’s absence from the opening ceremony of the Africa Cup of Nations, before quietly removing it from both its official website and social media platforms. The decision came after a wave of criticism directed at the outlet online.

The incident has raised questions about the editorial motivations behind such coverage and the way certain media outlets handle Africa’s most important sporting event.

Before being removed, the article was quickly relayed by several Algerian media outlets, including TSA, known for its openly hostile stance toward Morocco.

This episode comes against a broader Algerian media backdrop that, since the start of the Africa Cup, has largely avoided covering the sporting competition itself. Instead, coverage has tended to focus on perceived shortcomings or negative narratives related to Morocco, particularly regarding organization and protocol.

Following the same approach, other French outlets, including La Voix du Nord and Ouest-France, also republished the story, choosing to highlight peripheral details rather than the substance of the continental tournament itself.
