The Spanish National Police have apprehended the proprietor of a bakery in Melilla, following revelations of his exploitation of two Moroccan workers under deplorable conditions. This case is linked to human trafficking for labor exploitation and breaches of workers' rights.

Investigations uncovered that the workers endured grueling shifts exceeding 11 hours daily, starting at 4 a.m. and extending beyond 3 p.m., with no breaks or days off throughout the year. Their monthly pay ranged from 400 to 500 euros. Shockingly, this exploitation persisted for 16 years for one worker and 7 years for the other.

Further findings revealed that one of the workers was forced to live within the bakery premises in a room devoid of basic living conditions, lacking sanitary facilities or a kitchen, and suffering from the extreme heat of the ovens.

A joint inspection by the police and labor inspectorate exposed that the workers lacked legal contracts and social security registration, and were in an irregular administrative situation. The bakery owner failed to regularize their status, ensure their occupational safety, or provide health coverage.

Consequently, the workers have been recognized as victims of human trafficking, activating protection and support protocols for them. The judiciary has referred the case to the competent public prosecutor's office for further action.
