At a prestigious ceremony held in Sant Boi de Llobregat, near Barcelona, and attended by King Felipe VI, Moroccan-Spanish activist Hatem Azahari was awarded the Princess of Girona Social Award 2026. The distinction includes a financial prize of €200,000, along with a work of art.

Azahari is the founder of the Joves Units del Poble-Sec association, established in 2019. The organization focuses on creating real opportunities for young people at risk of social exclusion by promoting community sports, providing safe spaces, and revitalizing public areas.

Raised in Spain, Azahari is currently studying social work. His commitment to social engagement is further reflected in his role as a member of the Advisory Council Against Racism of the Barcelona City Council, as well as his position as a trustee of the Bofill Foundation.

According to the award’s organizers, Azahari was recognized for «his resilience and his ability to turn challenges into effective social commitment», describing his personal journey as a source of inspiration for young people.

In his acceptance speech, Azahari emphasized the transformative power of words in driving change. He called for stronger human connections, greater recognition of others, and highlighted the essential role of communication in fostering hope and building inclusive communities.
