After the collapse of its UK venture, British company Xlinks is now pivoting toward a new electricity interconnection project between Morocco and France, according to Africa Intelligence.
Named «Qantara Med», the initiative would involve laying a subsea cable to transmit renewable electricity between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
The proposed route would connect Nador, in northern Morocco, to a French port, most likely Marseille. To manage the project, Xlinks created a French subsidiary, Elemental Power, in 2024. The company is headed by French executive Luis Blanluet Terrou, the publication reports.
The move comes after the British government blocked Xlinks’ original plan to link Morocco to the United Kingdom through a massive undersea power cable. In June, the Labour government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer rejected the £25 billion (around €29 billion) project, opting instead to prioritise domestic energy production.
The decision marked a clear departure from the stance of the previous Conservative administration. In September 2023, the government of Rishi Sunak had granted the project «nationally significant» status, before it was ultimately scrapped.
