Just four days after Roberto De Zerbi's departure, Olympique de Marseille is hit with another seismic event. On Sunday, February 15, Medhi Benatia announced his resignation via a heartfelt message on social media.
Addressing the «Supporters, Marseillais», the former defender expressed that he has «always acted with passion and a singular focus: to restore Olympique de Marseille to its rightful place». He reminded fans that, from a sporting perspective, «we are still in the race», with «the goal of qualifying for the Champions League […] clearly within our reach» and the potential to «bring the Coupe de France home».
However, beneath this optimistic outlook, the former captain of the Atlas Lions revealed a deeper discontent. «I feel a growing dissatisfaction, a rupture that I deeply regret», he wrote, pointing to «the current climate» and the «tensions around the management». In Marseille, he emphasized, «results are the only judge of peace».
Benatia clarified that he has «indeed submitted (and not offered) [his] resignation», asserting that «the club will always come before individuals» and refusing to let his presence «become an obstacle or a burden to the organization and development».
«I leave with the feeling of having done my utmost», he added, while lamenting his inability to calm the environment around the team, which he believes is capable of achieving its objectives.
