In July 2023, Israel formally recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara, a move that was warmly received by Rabat. Despite this official stance, the recognition faces challenges in gaining full acceptance within certain circles in Israel.
This type of «error» is not new in Israel. On May 30, 2024, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was seen during an interview with French channels TF1 and LCI holding a map of the Arab world and Iran that excluded Western Sahara from Morocco. In response to the outcry from Moroccans on social media, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs described it as an «unintentional error».
On September 4 of the same year, Netanyahu made a similar misstep, reigniting discussions about the true extent and practical implications of Israel's recognition of Moroccan Sahara.
