Moroccan diplomat Aziz Mekouar has passed away at the age of 75, with Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, announcing the news in a tribute shared on X this Saturday.

Born in Fez in 1950, Mekouar had a long and distinguished career representing Morocco abroad. He served as ambassador to the United States from 2002 to 2011 and was later appointed ambassador to China in 2018. Over the decades, he also held diplomatic posts in Angola, Portugal, and Italy, earning recognition as a seasoned diplomat.

In his message, Amrani paid a heartfelt tribute to the late diplomat, hailing «a great servant of the State» and «an exceptional diplomat whose career honored Morocco». He also praised Mekouar’s «commitment, professionalism, and unwavering dedication» to the Kingdom, emphasizing the lasting mark he leaves on Moroccan diplomacy.

Amrani further highlighted both the human and professional qualities of the late ambassador, noting that he «embodied the values of loyalty, rigor, and discretion» throughout his career.

«I recall that our final exchange, last year in Casablanca at his bedside, gently returned to Washington, a city he held close to his heart», the ambassador said.

«He will be deeply missed, but above all, he will remain forever in the memory of those who had the privilege of knowing him», he concluded.
