Moroccan runner Mohamed El Morabity has won the 40th edition of the Marathon des Sables, one of the world’s toughest endurance races, following the final stage held on Saturday. He secured the overall title with a total time of 20 hours, 47 minutes and 39 seconds, confirming his dominance and extending his family’s legacy in the race.

His brother, Rachid El Morabity, finished second, nearly 30 minutes behind, while France’s Ludovic Pommeret took third place.

In the women’s race, French athlete Maryline Nakache claimed a comfortable victory with a time of 25 hours, 54 minutes and 29 seconds, after leading throughout the competition. Morocco’s Aziza El Amrani finished second, ahead of American runner Desiree Linden, who came third.

This 40th edition also marks a turning point for the Marathon des Sables, which has undergone major changes since its ownership shift in 2023, with ambitions to expand its global reach and diversify race formats.
