A partnership agreement outlining the development, equipment, and management of the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Museum in Essaouira was signed Monday in Rabat.
The deal was inked by André Azoulay, advisor to King Mohammed VI and founding president of the Essaouira Mogador Association, Culture Minister Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, Essaouira mayor Tarik Ottmani, and National Foundation of Museums head Mehdi Qotbi. It aims to strengthen the preservation and promotion of the city’s tangible and intangible heritage while supporting local cultural practices that make Essaouira a vibrant hub.
Bensaid said the agreement will boost the city’s cultural offering, attract investment, and support cultural and creative industries, noting that museums also enhance tourism appeal. He stressed that investing in culture requires the involvement of both public authorities and civil society.
Qotbi said the project seeks to turn the museum into a space for learning, discovery, and cultural exchange, in line with King Mohammed VI’s vision of placing culture at the heart of development. He added that it will complement Essaouira’s existing cultural ecosystem by linking historical memory with contemporary creation.
Ottmani noted that the agreement will further enrich the cultural landscape of the “City of Trade Winds,” which already attracts millions of visitors, adding that the revamped museum will bring added value to the city.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to diversify Morocco’s museum network and strengthen cultural infrastructure nationwide.
