Princesses Lalla Khadija, Lalla Meryem, and Lalla Hasnaa, accompanied by Brigitte Macron, the First Lady of France, attended on Wednesday evening the opening performance of the Royal Theatre of Rabat.
Before taking their seats in the Royal Box, the Princesses, alongside Lalla Hasnaa in her capacity as President of the Royal Theatre Foundation, and Macron were greeted by members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
The evening opened with a film presentation highlighting the Royal Theatre as a symbol of Rabat’s cultural and artistic renewal. Following the national anthem performed by the orchestra and choir, the audience enjoyed an exceptional musical program entirely led by Moroccan artists.
Pianist Marouan Benabdallah performed a classical repertoire, mezzo-soprano Ahlima Mhamdi delivered major operatic arias, Samira Kadiri presented Arab-Andalusian heritage pieces, and composer Driss El Maloumi offered a contemporary creation on the oud inspired by Moroccan sounds.
The program created a rich dialogue between universal classics, such as Tchaikovsky’s concerto and works by Bizet and Verdi, and Moroccan and Andalusian traditions, showcasing the diversity and excellence of the national artistic scene.
For this historic occasion, the Moroccan Philharmonic Orchestra, approaching its 30th anniversary, joined forces for the first time with the Royal Symphony Orchestra, celebrating 20 years. Under the direction of Dina Bensaïd, 76 musicians and 40 choristers performed together.
At the end of the performance, the Princesses and Macron met with several artists, including Samira Kadiri, Ahlima Mhamdi, conductor Dina Bensaïd, pianist Marouan Benabdallah, composer Driss El Maloumi, and Younes Terfas, Director of the Royal Symphony Orchestra.
The opening brought together hundreds of artists, cultural figures, intellectuals, and members of the diplomatic corps in Rabat.
Located in the Bouregreg Valley, near the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum, the Royal Theatre stands alongside Mohammed VI Tower as a symbol of Rabat’s transformation under the Rabat City of Light development program, reflecting Morocco’s ambition to place culture at the heart of its development.
