France: Complaint filed over racist remarks after man fires at children
DR

This Wednesday, in the French town of Espaly-Saint-Marcel, Haute-Loire, a father has lodged a complaint for «public insult based on origin, ethnicity, nation, race, or religion». This development follows an incident involving a 65-year-old man who allegedly fired a rifle at children on Sunday. The latest complaint, as reported by Le Parisien, was confirmed by Antoine Jocteur-Monrozier, the public prosecutor of Puy-en-Velay.

The complaint is bolstered by a «doctor’s certificate issued on Monday, citing a three-day work incapacity due to emotional shock». According to the same source, further investigations are underway regarding comments made by the man in a video highlighted by Le Progrès, as well as a report from SOS Racisme and the Movement Against Racism and for Friendship Among Peoples (MRAP).

Initially, the man was under investigation for «armed violence». Witnesses allege that he «chased the children with his rifle, shouting 'out with the Blacks and Arabs'». The incident reportedly took place on Sunday while the man was practicing shooting in his garage.

During police questioning, the accused claimed he was provoked by the children, who allegedly called him a «dirty Frenchman». He admitted to «firing into the air» from his window, citing «exasperation» with the noise. However, two witnesses told Le Progrès that he pursued the children while making the offensive remarks.

In a video mentioned by the media, the man reportedly expressed pride in «being racist». Following his release from police custody on Monday, he was summoned to appear in court this July on charges of «violence without temporary incapacity to work with a weapon».
