After an impressive run of eight consecutive victories, Moroccan mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Youssef Zalal suffered a decision loss to former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling in the main event of UFC Fight Night 274, held Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Zalal had his moments, particularly with his jab and a dangerous guillotine choke in the third round, but Sterling’s technical control over five rounds and his experience ultimately swayed the judges’ scorecards in his favor.
The bout, a clash of contrasting styles, Sterling’s suffocating wrestling against Zalal’s precise opportunism, played out like a tactical chess match, where distance management and transitions on the ground proved decisive.
Across the five rounds, Zalal’s explosiveness, along with the defensive sharpness he developed during his training camp, allowed him to fend off several takedown attempts from the former champion. Nicknamed «The Moroccan Devil», he showed resilience and composure throughout.
Despite the setback, Zalal remains one of the most promising prospects in the bantamweight division and is determined to cement his place among the sport’s elite.
At 29, Zalal was competing in his first UFC main event, following a strong winning streak. His most recent victory, a 98-second submission of Josh Emmett last October, further underscored his potential at the highest level.
Born in Casablanca in 1996, Zalal began kickboxing at the age of 10 to channel his energy. He moved to the United States at 15, where he trained with the FactoryX Muay Thai team.
He turned professional in 2017 and signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2020. After a difficult spell that saw him sidelined in 2022, he made a strong comeback in 2024, rebuilding momentum with an unbeaten run.
