Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch met on Thursday in Rabat with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who is on an official visit to the kingdom, in the presence of U.S. Ambassador Duke Buchan III.
The talks focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States, reads a press release by the government.
Akhannouch welcomed Washington’s reaffirmation of its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and its continued support for the autonomy plan as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute.
He also praised U.S. support for American companies seeking to invest in Morocco’s southern provinces, particularly in sectors such as green hydrogen, tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy, highlighting Morocco’s potential role as a gateway for U.S. investment into Africa.
The two sides also discussed prospects for enhancing economic, trade, and investment cooperation, as well as ongoing collaboration through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), alongside support for American initiatives in social sectors, notably education and healthcare.
The meeting was also an opportunity to recall the deep historical ties between the two countries, dating back to the 1787 Morocco–U.S. Friendship Treaty, and to express a shared ambition to further strengthen bilateral relations.
