The Polisario Front has condemned the recent visit by U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan III to the city of Dakhla.
In unusually strong language, the separatist front described the visit as «a violation of the international status of Western Sahara» and «an infringement on the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination».
It added that the visit «does not contribute in any way to creating the necessary climate for building trust in the ongoing talks regarding Western Sahara» and «contradicts the goal of constructive engagement by all concerned parties, negatively impacting the overall peace process».
The front further stated that, despite positions adopted by the United States in recent years, it had «cooperated in good faith with U.S. efforts to relaunch the peace process in Western Sahara».
It also expressed surprise at what it described as an «unfriendly gesture», while hoping to «put an end to such actions in order to build trust and allow the current momentum to continue».
In an apparent attempt to justify its recent attack on the city of Smara involving the launch of three projectiles, the Polisario Front claimed that «there is currently no effective ceasefire agreement».
