Japan on Friday welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, which states that «genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be one of the most feasible solutions» to the Sahara dispute, while signaling its intention to act in line with this position at both the diplomatic and economic levels.
The stance was expressed in a joint communiqué signed by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Japanese counterpart Motegi Toshimitsu during a videoconference held Friday to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Japan.
Japan also voiced support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations «based on the Moroccan autonomy plan» in order to reach a «just, lasting, and mutually acceptable» political solution to the conflict.
Tokyo further called on all parties to engage in discussions without preconditions and on the basis of Morocco’s autonomy initiative, considering that «genuine autonomy could represent one of the most feasible solutions», according to the joint statement.
To give concrete expression to this new position, Motegi stated that Japan «is ready to act, including at the diplomatic and economic levels, taking into account its position and the current evolution of the situation».
Tokyo now joins other major international powers and the overwhelming majority of the international community in supporting Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the only solution to the regional conflict.
