The Syrian embassy in Rabat officially reopened on Thursday, with the Syrian flag raised once again over the diplomatic mission’s headquarters during a ceremony presided over by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Syrian counterpart Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani.

During the ceremony, Al-Shaibani said the reopening carries strong symbolic significance and reflects the «new Syria’s» willingness to open a promising new chapter in relations with Morocco and strengthen bilateral cooperation based on «trust, solidarity and mutual respect».

The Syrian minister also reaffirmed Damascus’ ambition to deepen ties with Morocco across several sectors through a partnership based on dialogue and coordination aimed at promoting development for both countries. He further praised Morocco’s «honorable and steadfast» positions toward the Syrian people under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, as well as Rabat’s support for Syrians’ aspirations for «freedom, dignity and prosperity».

For his part, Bourita welcomed the reopening of the Syrian embassy, describing it as a highly significant step in reviving bilateral relations between the two countries following Morocco’s reopening of its embassy in Damascus in June 2025 under royal instructions.

The Moroccan minister said the move reflects the shared determination of Rabat and Damascus to strengthen lasting ties rooted in historical brotherhood. He also reiterated Morocco’s consistent support, under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, for the Syrian people and reaffirmed the kingdom’s attachment to Syria’s unity, sovereignty and stability.

Bourita further expressed Morocco’s readiness to support Syria during its delicate transitional phase through solidarity, dialogue and cooperation, in order to help fulfill the Syrian people’s aspirations for security, stability and development.
