In an unusual move, the Polisario leader has included the Tunisian president among the very limited circle of recipients of his Eid al-Adha congratulatory messages.
«At this critical moment in human history, I can only reaffirm my sincere desire to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and friendship between our two peoples by building solid relations based on mutual respect, in the service of the interests of our two countries...»
The message was sent as Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune held a phone call with his Tunisian counterpart on Wednesday, May 27. The two heads of state agreed to meet soon, according to a statement from the Algerian presidency.
Traditionally, Brahim Ghali reserves his greetings during religious holidays for the presidents of Algeria and Mauritania, the two countries that recognize the «Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)». Tindouf hopes Tunisia could join the two Maghreb states in a bid to break its diplomatic isolation and counter a growing trend of countries withdrawing recognition of the SADR in favor of Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara.
In October 2021, Tunisia abstained during the UN Security Council vote on Resolution 2602, which extended MINURSO’s mandate in the Sahara for another year.
However, in August 2022, the Tunisian president personally received the Polisario leader at Tunis Airport during his participation in the Japan-Africa Summit. Since then, the presence of Front delegations at conferences and meetings held in Tunisia has become increasingly frequent.
The Polisario leader’s initiative comes at a delicate time for the occupant of the Carthage Palace, who is facing mounting domestic opposition. Just last week, lawyers staged demonstrations to denounce repression and the worsening economic situation.
Algiers and Tunis signed a defense agreement in October 2025.
