Essaouira will host the 27th edition of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival from June 25 to 27, bringing together 460 artists from Morocco and around the world for three days of performances celebrating cultural exchange and musical fusion.
Among the headline acts is Brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown, the acclaimed percussionist, singer and composer whose work blends Afro-Brazilian traditions, samba-reggae and contemporary sounds. Organizers describe his appearance as one of the most anticipated moments of this year’s edition.
The festival will also welcome Cameroonian bassist and singer Richard Bona, who is set to share the stage with Moroccan diva Asmaa Lamnawar. The two artists, who have previously collaborated, are expected to perform two songs together.
Another major attraction will be The Harlem Spirit of Gospel by Anthony Morgan, bringing the energy and traditions of African-American gospel music to Essaouira.
The international lineup also features Lebanese singer Yasmine Hamdan, Palestinian electro-dabke group 47Soul and New York-born, India-raised vocalist Ganavya, whose music blends South Asian devotional traditions with spiritual jazz.
Moroccan artists will once again occupy a central place in the program. The festival will host legendary Amazigh group Oudaden, Casablanca rock band Hoba Hoba Spirit, reggae fusion project Bob Maghrib, and AZMZ, a multidisciplinary creation bringing together the female Ahwach troupe Bnat Louz from Tafraout and the Casablanca duo Raskas.
Held annually in the Atlantic city since the late 1990s, the festival has built its reputation on collaborations between Gnaoua masters and artists from diverse musical traditions, ranging from Amazigh music and African rhythms to jazz, gospel, electronic music and urban sounds.
