Morocco was chosen on Tuesday in New York to occupy the first seat at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will open next September.
The Kingdom was selected in a draw carried out, in keeping with General Assembly practice, by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during a plenary meeting of the body responsible for shaping the policies of the multilateral organization.
In this regard, UN Secretary-General's spokesman Stéphane Dujarric welcomed Morocco’s selection to take the first seat at the next session of the General Assembly. The Secretary-General has just drawn «the name of the country that will occupy the first seat in the UN General Assembly Hall at its next session. It is Morocco», the UN official said during a press briefing.
During the plenary meeting, the president of the 81st session of the General Assembly was also elected: Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman.
Member States also elected the countries that will serve as vice-presidents of this UN General Assembly session. They include the United States, Afghanistan, China, the United Kingdom, Russia, France, Egypt and Gabon.
Bringing together all Member States, the United Nations General Assembly provides a multilateral forum to discuss the full range of issues covered by the UN Charter. Each of the 193 Member States has an equal vote.
It also appoints the Secretary-General, on the recommendation of the Security Council, elects the Council’s non-permanent members and approves the United Nations budget.
