More than 105,000 people have benefited from Morocco’s direct housing assistance program, Secretary of State for Housing Adib Benbrahim said on Tuesday in Rabat.

Responding to an oral question in the House of Councillors, Benbrahim said the program has generated strong interest nationwide, attracting 218,000 applications. Moroccans living abroad account for 24% of beneficiaries, while women represent 40%. Young people under the age of 40 make up 52% of recipients.

He noted that 60% of beneficiaries purchased homes priced below 300,000 dirhams, while 60% received housing assistance of 70,000 dirhams, reflecting the program’s strong uptake among middle-income households. He added that support has been concentrated in cities and provinces facing shortages in social housing, helping to address existing gaps.

According to Benbrahim, 62 cities and urban centers are now free of shantytowns, improving the living conditions of nearly 384,818 households.

During the current government term, the living conditions of more than 81,000 households have been improved. Efforts are also continuing to strengthen oversight mechanisms to curb the expansion of informal settlements and achieve their complete eradication by 2028.

Regarding buildings at risk of collapse, the secretary of state said that surveys carried out nationwide have identified 53,728 such structures, while 28,000 have undergone detailed technical assessments.

On urban renewal, Benbrahim emphasized its role in rehabilitating disadvantaged neighborhoods, improving access to decent housing and addressing various forms of social and economic exclusion. He said these efforts focus on integrating peripheral neighborhoods into the urban fabric while correcting urban planning, social and commercial imbalances.
