Months of coordination between the Unified Socialist Party (PSU) and the Federation of the Democratic Left (FGD) culminated on Wednesday in Casablanca with the official launch of the «Left Alliance».
Its founders said the initiative is intended to «respond to the political, economic, social and human rights challenges facing our country, challenges that threaten national sovereignty and deepen social, territorial and regional inequalities».
The new alliance also says it seeks to «defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity» while stressing «the need to establish democracy as a means of consolidating that sovereignty, strengthening internal stability and safeguarding citizens’ dignity».
The PSU and the FGD further reaffirmed their opposition to «all forms of normalization» and reiterated their commitment to «defending the Palestinian cause, as well as all just humanitarian causes around the world».
The two left-wing parties had initially held talks with the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS) with a view to forming a broader alliance ahead of the legislative elections scheduled for September 23. Those discussions, however, failed to produce an agreement.
The PSU and the FGD currently hold one seat each in the House of Representatives.
