The U.S. case against John Bolton has taken a new turn. Prosecuted by American authorities for «alleged mishandling of classified information», the former national security adviser to President Donald Trump during his first term «has reached a deal to plead guilty in his classified documents case», the BBC reports. He will also be required to pay a $2.25 million fine, the same source said.

A new arraignment hearing, scheduled for June 26, is expected to allow John Bolton to enter his guilty plea. The agreement must be approved by a judge before it becomes final. As a reminder, on August 22, 2025, FBI agents searched Bolton’s home as part of an investigation into the alleged possession of confidential documents. He had faced a maximum sentence of ten years in prison for each charge.

John Bolton is known for his outspoken support for the Polisario Front. He was one of the first senior U.S. officials to openly criticize Donald Trump’s decision, announced on December 10, 2020, to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.

Relations between the two men have remained extremely strained since Bolton was dismissed in September 2019. In 2025, Donald Trump ended the Secret Service detail assigned to protect his former national security adviser.
