After stopping in Morocco, where he was received by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix traveled to Mauritania.
In Nouakchott, the UN official met on Tuesday with Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug. «This meeting was an opportunity to review bilateral cooperation between our country and the United Nations, explore ways to strengthen it, and discuss key international issues of common interest», the head of Mauritanian diplomacy wrote on X.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix also held talks the same day in Nouakchott with General Mohamed Vall Rais Rais, Chief of Staff of the Mauritanian Armed Forces. «The discussions focused on the existing cooperation between Mauritania and the United Nations, as well as ways to strengthen and develop it», the Mauritanian army said.
The visit comes as the strategic review of MINURSO’s mandate continues, following its launch on April 23 during a closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council. Mauritania, which holds observer status in the Western Sahara dossier, is among the parties concerned by the process.
Work on the review is expected to continue in the coming months, before being examined by Security Council members in the fall, ahead of the annual renewal of MINURSO’s mandate scheduled for October.
As a reminder, a United Nations delegation had already visited Mauritania in early April as part of preparations for the April 23 Security Council meeting devoted to the strategic assessment of the UN mission in Western Sahara, in line with Resolution 2797 adopted on October 31.
