Mountakhab 2026: Issa Diop, the new pillar of Morocco’s defense

Until 2026, the very idea of seeing Issa Diop in a Morocco shirt had been written off. Developed in France, capped at every French youth level and established in the Premier League for nearly a decade, the Fulham defender had himself said it would be «hypocritical» to represent any national team other than France. Yet at 29, it is with the Atlas Lions that he will play at the 2026 World Cup.

The call from Clairefontaine never came. Instead, Issa Diop now has a date with the world stage in a different shirt: Morocco’s.

Diop’s footballing journey began in Toulouse. Trained at France’s prestigious National Football Institute, he made his Ligue 1 debut at just 18 years old. His imposing physique, composure and reading of the game quickly set him apart. Appointed captain before the age of 20, he emerged as one of the French league’s most promising defenders. Having represented France at every youth level, from the U16s to the Under-21s, his path seemed destined to lead naturally to the senior national team.

In 2018, West Ham paid nearly €25 million to secure his services. The Toulouse-born defender went on to establish himself in the Premier League, making more than 150 appearances for the Hammers before joining Fulham.

The call that never came

For years, Diop performed in one of the world’s most demanding leagues without receiving the senior France call-up he had long hoped for. At one point, he even said it would be «hypocritical» to represent any country other than France, a remark that resurfaced when he was later called up by Morocco and sparked debate among supporters.

Around 2020, many observers believed a place with Les Bleus was only a matter of time. His performances drew praise, and his name regularly appeared in discussions surrounding the national team. Yet despite being monitored by the French coaching staff and featuring on extended lists, he never crossed the final threshold. As the years passed, competition intensified and the prospect of a senior France debut gradually faded.

A timely reinforcement for Morocco

Born to Senegalese and Moroccan roots, Issa Diop grew up at the crossroads of several identities. Long courted by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, the central defender ultimately chose to represent Morocco as he approached his thirties. While some supporters questioned the timing of his decision, his arrival addresses a clear need within the Atlas Lions squad.

Morocco’s central defence has faced growing uncertainty in recent months, with injuries and fitness concerns affecting key figures such as Nayef Aguerd and Romain Saïss. A position that was once one of the team’s greatest strengths at the 2022 World Cup suddenly required reinforcements.

With years of experience at the highest level and nearly a decade in the Premier League, Diop offers exactly that. At 29, he brings maturity, consistency and experience to a team with ambitions of competing among the world’s elite.

Since joining the Atlas Lions, he has settled quickly into the group. Valued for his professionalism and leadership, Diop has already earned the trust of the coaching staff while embracing Morocco’s project. More than a short-term solution, he provides an additional option that could prove crucial as the World Cup unfolds.
