Press enterprises operating in Morocco’s southern provinces staged their first protest on Wednesday, June 10, outside the headquarters of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication’s Communication Department. The demonstration was part of what organizers described as an ongoing campaign to defend their rights and oppose what they see as policies of exclusion and marginalization.

In a statement addressed to public opinion, the media outlets said the protest was prompted by the ministry’s continued failure to respond to their demands and by what they described as unfulfilled commitments made by sector officials. They argued that this reflected a lack of recognition for the role played by regional media in the southern provinces and across the Kingdom.

The participants hailed the turnout at the protest, saying it demonstrated the sector’s unity and determination to secure its rights.

They also criticized what they described as the ministry’s refusal to engage with the concerns of regional media organizations, accusing officials, including the minister, of ignoring their demands. According to the statement, such an approach runs counter to efforts to strengthen a professional and independent media landscape.

The enterprises vowed to continue escalating their protest actions until their demands are met, describing them as legitimate and non-negotiable.

As part of that campaign, they announced a second protest to be held on Thursday outside the headquarters of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication’s Culture Department.

The statement concluded by describing the movement as a call for stronger and more responsible regional media capable of contributing to local development. The organizers also urged journalists and independent media outlets across the Kingdom to support their cause.
