An Italian court has sentenced a 65-year-old businesswoman to 18 years in prison for killing a Moroccan man who had stolen her purse in Viareggio in September 2024.
The Lucca Court of Assizes found Cinzia Dal Pino guilty of murdering Noureddine Mezgui, a 52-year-old Moroccan known as Said, after she ran him over with her SUV following the theft, local media reported this Thursday. The court ordered that she serve her sentence under house arrest.
Prosecutors had sought a life sentence, arguing that Dal Pino acted with murderous intent and sought to administer her own form of justice rather than simply recover her belongings.
The defense, meanwhile, argued that the woman was trying to retrieve her purse, which contained sensitive personal documents, and asked the court to reclassify the offense as excessive self-defense. Lawyers also claimed that Mezgui had threatened her with a knife, although no weapon was ever recovered.
The incident, which occurred on the night of September 7-8, 2024, was captured by surveillance cameras. Footage showed the woman's vehicle striking Mezgui and running over him several times before she retrieved her purse and left the scene.
