The Spanish government has chosen to hold off on answering a parliamentary question submitted by the Basque pro-independence coalition Bildu concerning the death of Lahbib Mohamed Abdelaziz, announced on June 7.

The question, initially scheduled for the agenda of the executive’s weekly accountability session, has been postponed until next Wednesday due to the absence of Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, according to the conservative daily ABC.

Sources close to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s office say José Manuel Albares’s absence prevents the matter from being addressed this week. The government also believes it would be inappropriate for Félix Bolaños, Minister for the Presidency, Justice and Parliamentary Relations, who had initially been designated to respond, to do so in his place.

The Prime Minister’s office informed Bildu, through its foreign affairs spokesperson Jon Iñarritu, that the question could be raised at the next government accountability session.

Indeed, the rules of the lower house allow the government to «request, with justification, the postponement of a question on the agenda to the following plenary session, and only once per question».

The Polisario has already accused the Spanish government of choosing «silence when Morocco kills Sahrawi civilians», an accusation reiterated on Monday by Brahim Ghali in an interview with ABC.

Radical left-wing parties, including Sumar and Podemos, have also criticized the Spanish executive’s «silence» following the Polisario’s announcement of the death of Lahbib Mohamed Abdelaziz.
