The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, is continuing his regional tour. On Thursday evening, he was received in Nouakchott by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, according to the Mauritanian News Agency (AMI).
The meeting was attended by Nani Ould Chrouga, Minister in Charge of the Office of the President, the same source said.
Earlier this week, de Mistura visited Algiers, where he met Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. On June 7 and 8, he also travelled to the Tindouf camps, holding talks with Polisario leader Brahim Ghali.
Morocco is now the only remaining stop on the UN envoy’s regional tour, which is aimed at reviving the political process involving the four parties to the conflict: Morocco, Algeria, the Polisario Front and Mauritania. The initiative follows two rounds of discussions launched in February.
Separately, de Mistura met last week in Oslo with Massad Boulos, special adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump on African and Arab affairs.
