Morocco arrests ISIS supporter over planned terror plot
DR

Judicial police in Berkane, acting on intelligence provided by Morocco's General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), arrested on Thursday a supporter of the Islamic State (ISIS) group who was allegedly plotting subversive attacks targeting the Kingdom.

The arrest is part of ongoing efforts to counter extremist threats and prevent terrorist attacks targeting Morocco's security and the safety of its citizens, the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) said in a statement.

According to the preliminary investigation, supported by surveillance operations, the suspect had recently pledged allegiance to the self-proclaimed leader of ISIS with the intention of carrying out terrorist attacks aimed at seriously undermining public security, targeting civilians, public order and vital infrastructure as part of the group's so-called "individual jihad" strategy. Investigators said the suspect turned to planning attacks in Morocco after failing to join ISIS ranks in the Sahel.

The suspect has been placed in police custody pending a judicial investigation conducted by the BCIJ under the supervision of the prosecutor's office in charge of terrorism cases. The investigation aims to determine the full extent of his alleged extremist activities and identify any possible links with terrorist organizations operating in Morocco and abroad.
