Colombia’s president-elect, Abelardo de La Espriella, has responded to the congratulatory message sent to him by King Mohammed VI following his victory in the second round of the presidential election on June 21.
«The congratulations extended by His Majesty King Mohammed VI to Abelardo De La Espriella are among the most significant international statements received after the presidential election and reflect the Kingdom of Morocco’s desire to give fresh momentum to its relations with Colombia,» the president-elect said in a statement published on X.
«This royal message is more than a mere formality. The Moroccan Sovereign expressed his determination to work closely with the President to open up new prospects for partnership in areas of shared interest, based on constructive dialogue, mutual respect, and national sovereignty,» the statement read.
«Colombia and Morocco now have an opportunity to strengthen a relationship with strong strategic potential in cooperation, trade, investment, food security, port development, transatlantic connectivity, and diplomatic presence between Latin America, Africa, and the Arab world,» the same source added.
In his congratulatory message, King Mohammed VI stressed that «our joint efforts will make it possible to give new impetus to our bilateral cooperation, in a spirit of constructive dialogue and reciprocal respect for our national sovereignty, in the service of the aspirations and interests of our two friendly peoples.»
This diplomatic exchange is being closely watched by the Polisario Front. Colombia had restored its recognition of the «Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)» in August 2022, just days after outgoing President Gustavo Petro took office.
