Morocco's dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands was accompanied by several record-breaking performances from the Atlas Lions, according to data from Opta, the leading football statistics and analytics provider.

Midfielder Neil El Aynaoui completed 134 passes, the second-highest total by any player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Only Argentina's Leandro Paredes has recorded more in a single match, with 153 against Jordan.

Captain Achraf Hakimi also reached a milestone. His 30 touches inside the opposition's penalty area across World Cup matches are now the most by any Moroccan player in the tournament's history. Against the Netherlands, he registered five touches in the box, tied with Ismael Saibari for the highest total by a Moroccan player in the match.

Issa Diop's dramatic equalizer at 90:05 became Morocco's second-latest goal in World Cup history, behind only Zakaria Aboukhlal's strike against Belgium at the 2022 World Cup (91:51).

Opta's figures also showed Morocco were the more dangerous side throughout the match. The Atlas Lions generated 1.4 expected goals (xG) from 11 shots, including five big chances, while the Netherlands managed just 0.23 xG from six attempts over 120 minutes.

The victory also preserved Morocco's perfect record in World Cup penalty shootouts. After eliminating Spain in the Round of 16 in 2022, the Atlas Lions have now won both of the shootouts they have contested at the tournament.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again proved decisive, saving Crysencio Summerville's penalty before Ismael Saibari converted the winning spot-kick to send Morocco into the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Canada.
