At least 39 people were arrested in several Dutch cities after celebrations of Morocco's 3-0 victory over Canada and qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals turned violent, according to Dutch public broadcaster NOS.

Thousands of supporters celebrated across the Netherlands by waving Moroccan flags, honking car horns and setting off fireworks. In The Hague's Schilderswijk district, police issued an emergency order around 11 p.m. before riot police cleared the streets using a water cannon.

Authorities arrested 29 people after officers came under attack during the unrest, which left two police officers and a traffic controller injured. Twenty-five of those arrested were released overnight and fined.

In Rotterdam, riot police intervened after fireworks, glass, stones and eggs were thrown at officers. Police said a Molotov cocktail was also seized. Ten additional arrests were made in Rotterdam and Dordrecht.

Unrest was also reported in Utrecht, where cars were set on fire, bus shelters were vandalized, and officers were targeted with heavy fireworks.

In Amsterdam, three people were injured in a collision between a scooter and a fat bike during the celebrations. The scooter driver, 18, was arrested after police found he was driving without a license and that the vehicle had been reported stolen.

Police also dispersed groups in Leiden after officers were pelted with stones and glass, according to NOS.
