On Tuesday, Brahim Ghali appointed a successor to Lahbib Mohamed Abdelaziz on the Polisario's General Secretariat, following the latter's death on June 7 in a strike the Front attributed to a Moroccan drone. Ghali chose Salek Baba Hassana for the post.

«He is an important figure within the Front's apparatus. After studying in Cuba, he held several ministerial positions, including at the Ministry of Equipment. Hassana's father also served in the Spanish Parliament», a Sahrawi source told Yabiladi.

However, the appointment risks fueling discontent among the Rguibates Cherk, one of the most influential tribal groups in the Tindouf camps. «Lahbib Abdelaziz's replacement on the General Secretariat comes from the Oulad Dlim tribe», the same source noted.

At the Polisario's 16th congress, held in January 2023 at the Dakhla camp, Lahbib Abdelaziz was appointed to the General Secretariat both as his tribe's representative and as the successor to his mother, Khadija Hamdi, who was seriously ill at the time. According to the source, the tribal balance respected during that congress now appears to have been broken.

The appointment of Salek Baba Hassana is seen as another sign of Brahim Ghali's determination to sideline the Rguibates Cherk from key positions within the Front. Last March, he had already made a series of appointments within the Polisario's military chain of command that followed the same pattern.

The Rguibates Cherk are now awaiting Ghali's choice for the leadership of the Front's reserve militias, another position left vacant by Lahbib Mohamed Abdelaziz's death. The post was previously held by Mohamed Lamine Ould El Bouhali, also a member of the tribe.
