«The Minurso has received serious warnings from the UN headquarters in New York urging members of the mission to remain cautious and alerting about terrorist threats that could target civilians and soldiers operating in the Western Sahara», reveals a source close to the file.

«The United Nations has asked members of the Minurso to be prudent and increase their vigilance during their patrols whether on the territory controlled by Morocco or at the east of the security wall. For example, they were advised to put all their vehicles in the car parks belonging to the Minurso».

To prevent any attack targeting peacekeepers, «the UN ordered Minurso members to stop the individual tours. From now on, two soldiers at least have to go on inspections. These precautionary measures will be applied also in their homes where they are requested to shut the windows», indicates our source.

Kim Bolduc has contacted Morocco and the Polisario

Taking into account the danger of these terrorist threats, the head of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara, Kim Bolduc told her superiors in New York that she has informed the Moroccan authorities and the Polisario leaders. The Canadian senior official, called the two parties to ensure the protection of the mission's members.

«The united Nations is indeed fearing the removal of its members in the Sahara because of a terrorist group operating in the region», the same source states. Adding that : «It is in this extremely tense context that Minurso has decided to put an end to its checkpoint installed for a few weeks in Guerguerate». The 6th Team Site was installed on the 28th of April 2017 right after Polisario militias left the temper zone of Guerguerate.

These warnings come as a camp of the UN peacekeepers in Timbuktu, Mali, and French soldiers on Thursday, 1st of June, were targeted by an armed group. Besides the terrorist threat, the Minurso could also be in the sight of organized crime networks.
