The Mauritanian president to issue a warrant of arrest against his opponents living in Morocco

The long-awaited normalization of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Mauritania is likely to be postponed to a later date. The Mauritanian government is planning to issue arrest warrants against two of Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz' opponents, who in fact, are living in Morocco.

After succeeding in launching a draft that revised the constitution, the Mauritanian president is planning to concentrate on his opponents abroad. It is the last obstacle that he should face before making sure that he would remain in power as long as possible, and have one of his sons take the lead after him.

Thus, the government intended to issue international arrest warrants against some political opponents of Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz, as reported by Anbaa.

A Mauritanian embassy «located in a neiboring country» was asked to collect «information on the movements and places of residence» of the possible targets, adds the same source.

The Moroccan and Mauritanian diplomatic relations are threatened

Morocco is highly concerned by the new project set by the Mauritanian president. If achieved, it could delay the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries because the Kingdom is actually hosting two of the main opponents of Ould Abdelaziz’ s regime. They are namely Mustapha Lamam Ould Shafii, former adviser of the former president of Burkina Faso Blaise Compaoré, and the billionaire Ould Bouamatou.

«The father of this businessman was a member of the Liberation Army in the south. Not to mention that some members of his family, most precisely his sister, were born in Morocco. That is to say the ties that tie them to the Kingdom», a source from the Sahara told Yabildi.

Ould Bouamatou, a native of the same tribe as the Mauritanian president, Oulad Bousbaa, was long regarded as his biggest supporter before the breakup. By the end of 2015, Morocco rejected a request issued by Mauritania to extradite the billionaire.

The two men are the main opponents of Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz. «Of course, there are political activists from black community in Europe, the United States and Canada, but they do not stand up the hegemony of the president», the source said.

During the referendum campaign, the president announced holding «evidence» involving opponents in the financing of «acts of vandalism» against his power.
