Has the crisis linked to the Polisario’s participation to the 5th AU-EU summit, scheduled for the 29 and 30 November in Abidjan, finally been resolved ? Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission is the only official to answer this question so far.
«We have solved the problem here in the African Union. All members of the organization will participate to the summit», assured yesterday, from Brussels, Faki Mahamat during a press briefing co-chaired by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy at the European Union.
In order to dispel the doubt, the Chadian official stressed that he went to morocco (November 3). «I had the opportunity to meet his majesty the king. We talked and I believe that the position of the African Union is accepted by all its members», reports Europa Press. On the 2th of October, Faki Mahamat invited the 55 members of the continental organization to attend the summit in Abidjan.
Mogherini’s precision
Moussa Faki Mahamat also thanked the EU for letting the pan-African organization deal with this problem, which he called «an African matter». On the 15th of November, an EU senior official told media :
«It is the African Union that invites, and the summit is organized on the African soil».
Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, also recalled Brussels’ wish to see «everyone present in Abidjan». She said, however, that the African Union remains responsible for that. The diplomat also praised the «extraordinary ability» of the AU «to solve a problem that could have been complicated».
At a conference held on Wednesday, 15th of November, and headed by Federica Mogherini, Spokeswoman Catherine Ray said that «participating to this summit and other international events does not change the position of the European Union on the non-recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic».
