It is official now, Donald Trump finally recognized Al-Quds as capital of Israel and decided to move the American embassy in Tel Aviv to the holy city. Despite the warnings he received, including Morocco's Sovereign's, the US president has went on with his decision following a «new approach» to the peace process, in accordance with the bill passed by the Congress in 1995.
Although the decision of moving the American embassy to Jerusalem was taken 20 years ago it has never been implemented. Trump's predecessors have decided to postpone every six months the application of the law.
By acting this way, «they issued this waiver under the belief that delaying the recognition of Jerusalem would advance the cause of peace», as the President stated on Wednesday.
For Trump there is no distinction between the Eastern or Western parts of Jerusalem
«I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel» he said. According to the Republican president, he «judged this course of action to be in the best interests of the United States of America, and the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians». Trump explained that his decision is merely an extension of a historical reality, stressing that «Jerusalem was the capital of the Jewish people during Antiquity and the seat of modern government».
For the record, all US presidents, secretaries of State, and senior government and military officials have all visited Jerusalem. The President's speech was immediately greeted positively by Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, who said the holy city was «the capital of Israel for 3,000 years», although the state exists only since 1948.
The US president has taken over the Israeli national novel, making no distinction between the Western and Eastern parts of Al-Quds. This is contrary to resolution 181 approved on 29 November 1947 by the United Nations General Assembly on the partition of Palestine. The US decision is also in violation of the Oslo agreements of September 13, 1993 although these were signed in the garden of the White House.
