Morocco continues to progress in the global ranking of Paying Taxes, published this week and conducted by the World Bank and PricewaterhouseCoopers, a multinational professional services network headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The North African country is ranked 25th out of 189 investigated economies, jumping by 16 places on the scale compared to the 2017’s list where it was located 41st. Last year, Morocco advanced by 21 places continuing to better its position in the international survey.

As in the 2017 edition, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates led the list, followed by Hong Kong and Ireland. On the other hand, Venezuela (189th), Chad (188th) and the Central African Republic (187th) are at the bottom of the ranking. In the Maghreb region, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya are far behind Morocco, occupying respectively the 157th, 140th and 128th place. Mauritania is getting closer to the bottom, positioned 179th place.

Improved flexibility

«Substantial improvements to Morocco’s online platform for filing and paying taxes have reduced the time to comply by 56 hours to 155 hours. Integrating the tax platform with accounting software has enabled taxpayers to review in real time all the data on their fiscal status, thereby improving efficiency and flexibility,» the report's authors point out.

In addition, the World Bank study and PricewaterhouseCoopers put forward other data : for example, Morocco's total tax and contribution rate at the African level is 25.1% for income tax, 23.3% for labor taxation and 1.4% for other taxes. Similarly, the number of hours spent on corporate tax is 48, as opposed to 33 hours for labor taxation and 74 hours for consumption tax, for a total of 155 hours. A result well below the African average, which is 285 hours.
